My research on organizational capability development reveals that team effectiveness depends on understanding business drivers—the causal factors shaping outcomes.

As teams develop this understanding, they gain competence and create distinctive capabilities that may provide competitive advantages through three factors: market value (whether customers will pay for it), firm value (whether the organization supports it), and competitive insulation (protection from imitation).

However, the shift toward digital products has eroded competitive insulation, creating “transient advantage” where firms must continually innovate.

Team effectiveness is assessed through five variables: having the right people in the right roles, strong trust among members, proper information flow, mutual commitment to goals, and psychological safety.

Organizational assessment debriefs often reveal simple fixes—like one company that improved critical information flow during peak demand periods by implementing a daily 20-minute remote call
